Deer Lake Park's fields were originally used as part of a prison farm. There are still remnants of old fences in the forests. In 1913 when the real estate boom went bust more than ten large estates and many more smaller cottages had been completed around this park. (according to the Community Heritage Commission 2005 City of Burnaby)
